MEETING WITH THE CAMEROONIAN COMMUNITY IN GLASGOW

On Saturday, 25 July 2026, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of Cooperation with the Commonwealth, H.E. Felix Mbayu, led the Cameroonian delegation attending the Commonwealth Games to a meeting with Cameroonian nationals resident in Glasgow.

The gathering, organised by the Cameroonian Association and Sympathisers in Scotland (CAMASS), took place during the association’s monthly fellowship meeting. It provided an opportunity for participants to share a meal, strengthen bonds of friendship, and reflect on their enduring attachment to their motherland.

In his address, the Minister expressed his appreciation to the organisers for bringing the community together and commended members of the diaspora for preserving their cultural identity while making meaningful contributions to their host communities. He reminded them of their responsibility to serve as worthy ambassadors of Cameroon by upholding the country’s values and promoting its image abroad.

The Minister also acknowledged the diaspora’s vital contribution to the national economy through remittances, which are estimated to account for approximately five per cent of Cameroon’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The representative of the Ministry of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development subsequently briefed participants on the various investment opportunities and incentives available to encourage greater diaspora participation in the country’s development.

During the interactive session that ensued, members of the Cameroonian diaspora raised a number of concerns, particularly the need for improved access to essential consular services, including the transcription of birth certificates for children born abroad. In response, the Minister assured participants that their concerns had been duly noted and announced that a team from the High Commission of Cameroon in London would be deployed to Glasgow to provide the required consular services and facilitate the processing of outstanding administrative requests.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with government officials and members of the diaspora reaffirming their commitment to maintaining close ties and working together to advance Cameroon’s development and promote the welfare of Cameroonians living abroad.
